Ruff, Ruff on the road - Travelling with a dog

If you are taking a road trip and want to take your furry friend with you, it pays to plan ahead. With some careful research, it can be a fun experience for you both and a great way to ensure that neither of you gets lonely while you are on holiday.

Plan some breaks

If you have an active pup who is used to running about, they might find it hard to stay in the car all day. Plan your day with some breaks where they can have a good run around, preferably in the heat of the day. If you are heading into the outback, it might be useful to have a glance at some maps to see where you might be able to find some open spaces like parks or football ovals instead of just stopping anywhere on the road. Snakes often like hanging out in the bush or grassland and it can be dangerous for dogs to accidentally disturb them.

Plan your accommodation

While you are on the road, it's useful to know which dog-friendly accommodation options you will have. That way you can make sure that your dog can sleep with you in your motel and you can feel confident knowing you are not breaking any rules. As it can be a long distance between motel accommodation options on a road trip, it can be useful to do your research online before you head off, and make some calls if you are still not sure if your accommodation is pet-friendly.

Bring doggy supplies

Even if your dog eats a relatively normal diet, you might find it hard to reload on their snacks and treats on the road, especially if you are going through small country towns. It can be useful to bring enough food to keep them going, as a road trip where you are sharing confined quarters with your dog may not be the best time to start experimenting with their diet. You don't want to risk having any doggy digestive upsets when you are having a fun road trip together.

A road trip can be a fun way to hang out with your dog while getting to seeing some of the beautiful countryside. Before you hit the road, be sure to write out a detailed packing list and look at a map to find some great places to stop for a play as well as somewhere to sleep at night.
