Staying a Hotel With a Dog: 4 Essentials You Need to Pack

Many hotels allow travellers to bring their dogs with them, but even with permission from hotel staff, it can be hard to travel with a dog. If you are planning to stay in a hotel room with a dog, the right items can make your stay easier. Here's an idea of what you need to pack.

1. A Map or Travel App

Before settling in for the night, make sure you burn off your pet's excess energy. Use a map or a travel app to find a safe place to walk around your hotel, or contact the hotel's concierge to find a nice dog park near the hotel. If your dog is tired, it will make it easier for him to sleep and behave in the room.

2. Old Laundry

When you arrive in the room with your dog, don't invite him to look around. Instead, have him hold still while you unpack your bags and spread some old laundry around the room. If you let your dog explore the space first, he is likely to see it as "his" space rather than your space.

In some cases, he may even pee in the room to establish his presence. By spreading some laundry around the room, you spread around your smell. That makes the room less unfamiliar to your dog. Instead, he will see it as your space, and he won't be as tempted to mark this strange, new territory.

3. Piece of Turf

Even if your dog isn't interested in marking his territory, just being in a new space could make him get nervous and have an accident. To avoid that, bring a small piece of turf and lay it in one corner of the hotel room. If your dog needs to go quickly and can't get outside, he can just use the turf.

So that your dog associates the piece of turf with giong to the bathroom, lay it under him a few times just before he poops at home before your holiday.

4. Engaging Toys

Many hotels allow you to leave your pets unattended. Before doing so, make sure the hotel allows it and see if they have a time limit on the practice. To keep your dog engaged and quiet while you are gone, consider buying him a few new toys.

You can buy toys that have food frozen inside of them. As your dog plays, the food unfreezes and surprises your pup with a treat.
